Basketball Rankings Information
Basketball rankings are published by different basketball governing bodies as soon as the matches take place and the rankings change. College basketball rankings are published by the NCAA and they are based on the RPI ranking system. According to this ranking system, the final ranking will comprise the team’s winning percentage, 25%, its opponents’ winning percentage, 50% and the winning percentage of the opponents’ of the teams opponents which is 25%. In 2004, the rules for calculating the RPI rankings were updated considering the differences between the matches played home and those played away. Currently, a home win counts as 0.6 win, an away win counts as 1.4 wins, a home loss counts as 1.4 losses and a road loss is 0.6 losses. There are rankings published by the NBA for professionals, the NCAA for college basketball or the NHFS for the high school basketball teams.
A recent NCAA RPI ranking situates the Syracuse team on the first position in the top with a RPI of 0.67996, followed by Duke with 0.675, Kansas St. with a RPI of 0.672. The following teams in top ten are Kansas (0.655), Villanova (0.661), Texas (0.659), Georgetown (0.651), Pittsburg (0.650), Wisconsin (0.648) and Kentucky (0.646). In top 25 there are team names such as W Virginia, Gonzaga, Temple, Xavier, New Mexico, Purdue, N Iowa, Michigan St, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, BYU, Butler or Connecticut. You can find the ranking of your favorite team on the specific governing body depending if it is a high school team or a college team.
High school rankings are calculated after the matches played within the basketball tournaments. The body governing basketball at high school level is the National Federation of State High School Associations or simply the NHFS. NHFS is the body that provides the rules for most of the sports played in high school in the United States. Most of the public high schools, sometimes even the private high school are part of a state high school association which belongs to the NHFS.
The NBA publishes a top with the best high school basketball players, depending on the year of high school they are in. So, the high school basketball rankings start with the senior players. The best senior basketball player according to the NBA rankings is Harrison Barnes (Ames, IA) followed by Perry Jones (Duncanville, TX) and Brandon Knight (Coral Springs, FL ). The first three most promising junior players are Michael Gilchrist (Elizabeth, NJ), Marquis Teague (Indianapolis, IN) and Rakeem Christmas (Philadelphia, PA). And the first three best sophomore basketball player is Andre Drummond (Mt. Vernon, NY) followed by Isaiah Austin (Burleson, TX) and DaJuan Coleman (Syracuse, NY).
According to the Max Preps, basketball rankings of high school teams have on the first place the Saint Patrick (Elizabeth, NJ) team followed by Yates (Houston, TX), Northland (Columbus, OH), Bloomington South (Bloomington, IN), DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD), Paterson Catholic (Paterson, NJ), Findlay Prep (Henderson, NV), Melrose (Memphis, TN) and Ames (IA).
